Its court case is being followed by a watchful eye and is quickly becoming another high-profile case. Even though murders are a daily occurrence in the US, someone or some organization has decided to make the public scrutinize this particular case. It is even more sensational due to the racial difference between the victim and the killer, one being white and the other black. Who can forget the 1994 sensationalized case of OJ Simpson, the NFL player accused of murdering his former girlfriend.
The public will be keeping a close eye on this court case, emotions will be stirred, some altercations and social disruptions are likely. Why are media outlets sensationalizing this case? The case involves Karmelo Anthony, a 17 year old who has been charged with the first-degree murder of another 17 year old, Austin Metcalf. Before news media are able to plaster this case on all its front pages and create a narrative that misleads and gas-lights the public, the audience that gets to know the police report will know the difference between truth and fiction. Don’t fall for short-sighted gossip and explanations. Just get to know the police report first. Don’t be a victim of sensationalized false narratives.
News outlets first made mention of the Frisco Police Department’s arrest report. The incident details Karmelo Anthony stabbing Austin Metcalf once in the chest during an altercation. Metcalf died shortly after. Witnesses stated that the two did not know each other. The altercation began when Metcalf asked Anthony to move from under the Memorial High tent during a rain delay. Anthony reportedly reached into his bag, saying “touch me and see what happens.” After Metcalf touched and pushed Anthony, Anthony allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed him before fleeing. On the statements section, when officers approached Anthony and asked if he is the alleged attacker, he reportedly said, “Im not alleged, I did it”. He claimed self-defense by saying Metcalf “put his hands on me” after being warned not to. He asked officers if Metcalf would be okay and if his actions could be considered self-defense. As for evidence, officers found a bloody knife in the bleachers. Anthony had blood on his finger. There were over 30 witnesses and Metcalf’s twin brother was present. (1)
Now the public will wait weeks and perhaps months for the outcome of Anthony’s court case. During this time, the public will be flooded with false exaggerated plots and emotional, scandalous stories put out by tabloids and social media. Be on the lookout for these and pay no attention. It is the hope of this writer that the public is not triggered to vandalize nor disrupt society in any way after reading emotionally charged stories by other news outlets. Read up on the law also so that we are not fooled in any way. In this case where Metcalf placed his hands on Anthony, Texas law requires a defensive response to be proportionate. Using deadly force to counter a hand grab is disproportionate. Hand grabbing in itself does not pose an imminent threat of death so responding with deadly force is not justified. This writer will not take part in sensationalizing this case. Only know the law so you are well-informed and not fooled by high-charged news reports.
